The Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Willie
Obiano, has said that his government will
spend the sum of N10 billion on construction
of more roads in the state.
Speaking during an inspection of projects in
the state, the governor expressed
satisfaction with the quality and pace of work
on the roads inspected, which include 27km
Amansea-Ndiukwuenu-Awa-Ufuma Road,
4.5km Ndiukwuenu-Okpeze Road and 5.5km
Aamansea-Agu-Awka Old Road.
He stated that the roads were vital to the food
basins of the state, adding that they traverse
four local government areas of Awka North
and South as well as Orumba North and
South and that when completed, will facilitate
the evacuation of agriculture produce from
the food basins of the state. “We will keep a
close watch on the progress and quality of
work done on these road projects because
we are determined to ensure that we achieve
our target in agriculture,” he said.
At the Amansea-Agu-Awka Old Road, Obiano
called on the residents to be vigilant and
report suspicious movements to the security
agents to forestall any threats to peace and
security.
The governor urged the Hausa community
living in the axis to maintain harmonious and
peaceful coexistence with their host
communities and comply with the laws of the
land. He called on other non-indigenes
resident in the state to assist the government
to secure their places of abode. He restated
the resolve of his administration to transform
Awka to a befitting capital city of international
standard with basic infrastructure, including
shopping mall, events arena and other
recreation centres.
The Commissioner for Works, Mr. Calistus
Ilozumba, said the roads under construction
were located in “difficult” terrains and
awarded to competent contractors. Ilozumba
explained that the Amansea-Agu-Awka end
of the roads would include streetlights and
drains to check erosion.
Meanwhile, Governor Obiano who was earlier
not happy about the erection of structures in
locations that violate the original master plan
of the three major cities in the state, Awka,
Onitsha and Nnewi, has moved swiftly to
restore sanity and halt the prevailing trend of
developers disregarding the approved plan
for urban development and renewal in
Anambra State.
Obiano expressed disappointment that some
citizens of the state had taken it upon
themselves to test the resolve of the
government on some grey areas of
governance and warned that his
administration would not hesitate to enforce
relevant laws that would engender sanity and
order in the state.
He warned developers to pay attention to
global best practices as it relates to property
development like the city master plan and
right of way, adding that the task of taking
Anambra State to the enviable state of the
forefathers’ dream is a collective effort of
everybody.
According to him, “this administration will not
tolerate flagrant violation of the law and any
encroachment on government property by
anybody irrespective of social status. People
should learn to obey the laws of the land by
complying with the guidelines on urban
development.
“The owners of the demolished structures
were given enough time and notice to make
amends but they chose to disobey the
directive perhaps with a view to test the
resolve of the government. Speculators
should steer clear of government properties
because they would be held accountable,” he
stressed.
Recently at the popular Upper Iweka axis in
Onitsha, some illegal structures built by a
transporter at a government recreation park
were dismantled on the orders of the
governor. The news source sun.
