… Rita Lori-Ogbebor, others laud Ogiame effort

Itsekiris in Delta State yesterday turned out in their thousands jubilating over the decision of the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse II to rescind the planned removal of ‘Ogiame’ from his traditional title.The crowd, made up of women, youths and the aged, trooped into the palace jubilating endlessly, praising and praying for long life and prosperity for the royal father, who they regard as God-sent to Iwere land. The occasion which was like another coronation anniversary, witnessed canon shots booming from every part of the palace ground with Itsekiri women dancing in their traditional attire.
A foremost traditional Chief of Itsekiri Chief Rita Lori-Ogbebor, commended the Olu for listening to the voice of his people. “As you can see for yourself, the joy and happiness being demonstrated by all Itsekiri sons and daughters who are here today to hear this goodnews. For us, we regard the Olu as next to God. Today’s happiness is likened to the day we all migrated from the great Benin kingdom.
“As Christians, we have always joined our great king to worship God at any time he is in the church. In fact, there were a lot of misconceptions in the statement as published in the newspapers. What I want to say, is that the Olu and his people have reconciled and we thank God Almighty for making it possible.
“Even in anger, we remember he is our King. In anger, we also know that he cares for all Itsekiri sons and daughters. So, you can see he was not dishonoured and I want to thank all the Itsekiri youths for their peaceful disposition today,” Chief Rita Lori-Ogbebor, who holds the title of Irojowo of Warri kingdom, said. On his part, the Transition Committee Chairman, Warri South Local Government, Dr. Austin Uroye, expressed satisfaction over the peaceful resolution of the issue.
“It is true that we had differences for the past four days. We are human, it is only God that is perfect and as humans, we could have differences and because of the civilization that is prevalent in Itsekiri culture, it has been proved to the entire world that Itsekiri have very great respect for their monarch.”
