Determined to resolve the lingering crisis in
Lagos State University (LASU), Governor
Babatunde Fashola (SAN) yesterday
approved a 60 per cent reduction in the
school fees.
Addressing a press conference in Lagos, his
Special Adviser on Education, Otunba Fatai
Olukoga, said the state Executive Council has
ordered the university’s Governing Council to
implement 34- 60 per cent cut
in the school
fees immediately.
Flanked by the Commissioner for Information
and Strategy, Mr. Aderemi Ibirogba, the
Special Adviser to the governor on
Information and Strategy, Mr. Lateef Raji and
his Media counterpart, Mr. Hakeem Bello,
Olukoga said the governor reduced the fees
after extensive deliberation on the report of
the ad-hoc committee.
His words: “The ad-hoc committee has
recommended and government has accepted
that the fees and charges payable by
students for incidental services and
materials are amendable to a downward
review for two main reasons: •Some of the
fees component have been applied to
students across all levels when in fact, they
can be justifiably limited to students at a
particular level only; and •Some of the
charges included can still be reduced on
compassionate grounds.
“On the basis of these principles, government
agrees that with the subsidized tuition fees
and appropriate moderation of the incidental
fees, a reduction ranging from 34 per cent to
60 per cent is possible across the different
faculties and courses.
“Government has therefore, approved the
reduction and, in accordance with the law
setting up the university, forwarded its
approval to the Governing Council for
consideration and implementation.
“Pursuant to its mandate, the Governing
Council will issue details of what is now
payable by students in each department and
deal with all other management matters of
the university. All individuals and groups
within the community are advised to relate to
the university’s council accordingly,” Olukoga
said.
He noted that notwithstanding the approval of
reduced fees for the students, government
will retain and continue with its enhanced
scholarship and bursary provisions.
He said the research fund sponsored by the
government will also be maintained to
enhance a culture of research and innovation
in the institution.
“Moreover, government will continue its
increased spending on infrastructure and
physical development of the campus, which
has already begun to enhance the stature of
the Lagos State University as a leading
institution of higher learning in Nigeria,” the
Special Adviser said.
Olukoga, who assured that LASU students
who had been charged to court for disturbing
public peace, will be given favourable
consideration, said the government is
optimistic that the students and workers of
the university will immediately resume and
assist the government in moving the state
forward.
