Speaking to SoccerStar in a chat, an egghead in the commission, who pleaded anonymity expressed disappointment that the football federation was not looking into the possibility of putting the stadium to use, warning that the ministry might be forced to compel them to do so.
“Honestly, we cannot understand why the football federation has not started looking into the prospect of putting the renovated stadium into use
. The stadium is ready for use but you know that sports commission is not in control of the national teams.
“We thought that the football federation would approach us to use the stadium to prosecute international competitive or friendly matches but it surprises us that they still prefer other venues like the U.J. Esuiene Stadium, Calabar or the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna.
“They have continued to hide under the excuse that Abuja fans don’t come out to support the team. I don’t want to believe that excuse because I want to think that if they do enough sensitisation, Abuja fans would come out enmass. Have we not seen matches in this stadium, where the security agents find it difficult to control crowd,” he queried.
Asked what the sports commission intends to do to ensure that the football federation change its modus operandi, our source noted decision would soon be taken.
“What is obvious is that the trend cannot continue. We will look at the best way to change the situation. We would want to avoid any confrontation that might overheat the polity but we will soon open dialogue with the football federation,” our source sun news
